Posted on May 3, 2017October 27, 2020 by Marisa

Where can I buy authentic Polish sausages? Which supermarket sells the best Hungarian paprika?  Do you know where I can find Russian pelmeni?

These and many other questions in regards to finding ingredients for your home cooked meals have come up time and time again. In this 4 part post series, we aim to provide you with a list of our top Specialty Grocers in Munich.

Lastly, our top picks for Hungarian, Polish, Russian & other Eastern European grocers.

After speaking with several members of the Expat community, as well as, through our own experiences, we can recommend these shops due to their convenient location, wide variety of products and ease of navigating the aisles!

Hungarian

  • Paprika Haus – is located directly in the Viktualienmarkt. This small, but well stocked Paprika Haus offers a fantastic assortment of authentic Hungarian products such as paprika, sausages, wine and cheese. Don’t worry if you work up a small appetite while shopping. We can recommend ordering up a bowl of homemade Gulaschsuppe or trying a baked Langosch.

Polish

  • Polonika – a newly opened Polish delicatessen conveniently located near the U2 stop Theresienstrasse.  Here you will find a variety of Polish Kielbasa, as well as over 30 different varieties of Polish cold cuts.  Many Polish essentials can also be found here such as Powidla (a sort of prune butter) or Pigwa i syrop rozany (quince and rosehip syrup).  Quince and rosehip syrups are often added to black tea and it tastes divine! Address: Heßstraße 58

Russian & Eastern European

  • Kolumbus – conveniently located just 50 meters from the U3/U6 Station Goetheplatz.  Kolumbus offers authentic Russian food products, as well as a fantastic selection of Vodka.  In addition to food and drink, Russian DVD’s, books, MP3s and audio CD’s are also available in the shop.  Address: Mozart Str 3
  • Prima – located in Berg am Laim, on the eastern side of Munich.  Most Expats agree, that this supermarket has the best selection of Russian and Eastern European products in Munich.  Prima also boasts an incredible fish and meat deli counter.  Therefore, finding the perfect sausage or smoked fish has never been easier. Address: Schlüsselbergstr. 13
Tip: Excellent deals can be found on bulk produce, such as fresh herbs, veggies and fruits.
