The City Starlings team has sacrificed their waistlines in order to tell you about the best ice cream flavors, textures and overall quality we could find here in Munich. Here are the results of our taste test.

So many flavors, so little time!!! Hopefully the good weather persists and we have time to go back and try all the amazing flavors these shops have to offer.

Here are our top 6 ice cream parlours in Munich:

Der Verrückte Eismacher

Crazy is right! Weißwurst? Beer? Sweet Mustard? Bacon-Vanilla?… These are all ice cream flavors you will often find at Der Verrückte Eismacher, which translates to The Crazy Ice Maker in English. Flavors change often, so check their facebook  page for the latest flavors or fall down the rabbit hole and surprise yourself. They also offer a few regular flavors, as well as vegan options, so there´s always something for everyone. They even let you try a spoonful of any other flavor with your order. Right across from the LMU University in Schwabing, you will usually find people waiting in line. I tried the Walnut-Figs and Minty-Lime. It was definitely worth the wait. The ice cream here is handmade, rich and creamy! The service is extremely friendly, happily double-checking the chart to confirm a gluten free option for one of us. This is definitely one of City Starling´s favorites.

Imagination is the only weapon in the war against reality. – Lewis Carroll, Alice in Wonderland

True & 12  Handmade Ice Cream

Natural flavors like Chai, Matcha Green Tea, Goat Cheese & Honey, dance around in our dreams. The owners of True & 12 have been dedicating the last few years to perfecting the art of ice cream making. The pursuit of high quality ingredients included. Truly local and artisanal, their ice cream is made with milk from Bavarian grass fed cows. Fresh, local, seasonal, artisanal, authentic, what is not to love about True & 12! Try it for yourself!
Opening Hours: Daily from 12 – 21:00 (weekends until 10PM, weather permitting)
Address: Rosenheimer Strasse 14 (across from the Gasteig)

Eiskonditorei Sarcletti

With its first shop opening in 1879, ice cream making runs in this family business. Their current location in Neuhausen opened in 1921, but was rebuilt in 1946 after being destroyed in WWII. From anywhere between 50-70 different flavors (depending on the season), this shop is always bustling, but the lines move pretty fast. I’ve never sat at a table, but you do have the option to sit and order. I prefer to take it with me and stroll thru the beautiful side streets in and around Rotkreutzplatz.
Health Tip: Those with food intolerances: 90% of their ice-cream is gluten-free. There are fruit varieties (made with soy milk) and lactose-free options (goat´s milk or coconut-based)
Opening Hours: Daily from 9:00 – 22:00 (summer hours)
Address: Nymphenburger Strasse 155, 80634 Munich

Ice Date

Hands down, one of our favorite places to go when craving a healthy, sweet treat. Located in the trendy neighborhood of Maxvorstadt, this parlour offers not only vegan ice cream, but it is also gluten, soy and refined sugar free. The “ice cream” is made from cashew milk, fruit, and naturally sweetened with dates – AMAZING! Offering daily changing flavors, Ice Date proves one does not have to sacrifice flavor in order to enjoy a healthy, yet indulgent treat!
Opening Hours: Mon -Sun from 12:00 -20:00
Address: Amalienstraße 91, 80799 München

Del Fiore Gelato

Where Italian gelato meets Munich! With three convenient locations, a yummy scoop of gelato is always within reach. Del Fiore uses only the best natural ingredients, many of which are organic, to create rich, creamy and innovative flavors. The vegan sorbets are truly divine, boasting a high fruit content combined with an incredible creamy texture. Best of all, if you are in the mood for more than just ice cream, then head on over to the Gärtnerplatz location where you can also enjoy breakfast, lunch or dinner at Del Fiore Cafe.
Opening Hours: Find location hours here, here and here.

Ballabeni Ice Cream

Also handmade with high quality ingredients, we found the texture not as creamy as other places we had tried. However, the Choko-Ginger I ordered was delicious. They also give you a spoonful of any flavor with your order. We also like that their paper cups and spoons are 100% biodegradable. Did not like: We felt a bit rushed, although the queue wasn’t that long.  If you are in the Art District or Museum quarter, then take an ice cream break here.
Fun Tip 1: Ice cream courses are offered under the direction of Giorgio Ballabeni himself.
Fun Tip 2: An ice cream truck can be hired for work events, weddings, birthdays, etc.
Opening Hours: Daily from 11:30 – 22:30
Address: Theresienstr. 46 Munich (main shop). They also have a workshop at Seidlstr. 28 where they create new flavors. Open for customers as well.
